Rome Last-Day Checklist: Airport, VAT Refunds and Packing

The last day in Rome is when small mistakes become expensive. A missing passport, overweight suitcase, late taxi, wet receipt or unvalidated VAT refund form can turn a beautiful trip into airport stress. The solution is to prepare the night before departure.

Start with documents. Put your passport, flight confirmation, boarding pass if available, wallet, payment cards, phone and hotel details in a fixed place. If you made VAT refund purchases, create a separate folder for invoices, tax-free forms and receipts. Do not pack this folder in checked luggage. Keep it with your passport.

Next, organize goods. Tax-free items should remain unused, with tags attached where applicable. Do not wear new shoes, use a handbag, open cosmetics or remove labels before leaving the EU if you plan to claim a refund. Pack goods so customs can inspect them without forcing you to unpack your entire suitcase. High-value items should be especially accessible.

Weigh your luggage if possible. Rome shopping can add more weight than expected: leather goods, ceramics, books, wine, food gifts and fashion all accumulate quickly. Move heavy items before leaving the hotel, not in the check-in line. Check airline rules for liquids, batteries and fragile goods.

Choose your airport transfer with a buffer. Fiumicino requires time for both transport and terminal procedures. Ciampino can be smaller but still needs planning. If you have VAT refund forms, do not cut timing close. At Fiumicino, if goods are in checked luggage, handle VAT validation before check-in.

Avoid ambitious sightseeing on departure day. A short coffee, final walk or nearby church visit is fine. Crossing the city for one last museum is risky with luggage and airport pressure. If you need final gifts, choose something near your hotel or at the airport, but do not rely on airport shops for specific boutique items.

Your final Rome memory should be calm: espresso, packed bags, correct documents and a comfortable transfer. Treat the airport process as part of the trip, not an afterthought.
