Entering the Pantheon: Do You Need Tickets?

The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved architectural marvels of the ancient Roman Empire. Famous for its massive unreinforced concrete dome and the open "oculus" that lets sunlight (and rain) pour onto the marble floor, it has stood proudly for nearly two thousand years. For decades, tourists could freely stroll in and out of its giant bronze doors. However, recent rule changes have left many travelers confused, frequently asking: Do you need tickets to enter the Pantheon in Rome?

As of July 2023, the Italian Ministry of Culture officially introduced an entry fee. Yes, you now absolutely need a ticket to enter the Pantheon Rome. The standard entry fee for tourists is €5. Entry remains free for residents of Rome, children under 18, and those attending religious mass, as the building still functions as the Catholic Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs.

There are two ways to get your tickets. The most recommended method is to book online in advance through the official Italian Ministry of Culture portal (Musei Italiani). This allows you to select a specific time slot and bypass the incredibly long purchasing queues. Alternatively, you can buy tickets at the physical ticket counters or automated machines located right outside the monument, but you should expect significant waiting times, especially during the summer.

When visiting, remember that because it is an active church, a strict dress code applies. Security guards will turn away visitors wearing sleeveless shirts, tank tops, or short shorts, so be sure to cover your shoulders and knees.
