Cash, Cards and ATMs in Rome: A Money Guide for Visitors

Rome is card-friendly in many places, but cash is still useful. Hotels, major restaurants, museums, boutiques and department stores usually accept cards, while smaller cafés, markets, taxis, churches, public toilets and quick snack stops may be easier with coins or notes. The smartest approach is to carry both.
Withdraw euros from reliable ATMs, preferably machines attached to banks. Be cautious with standalone currency machines in tourist zones because fees and exchange rates may be unfavorable. When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, compare carefully. Many travelers do better by paying in euros and letting their own card issuer handle conversion, but your card terms matter.
Keep small cash available. A €50 note is not always convenient for a €1 coffee or small church donation. Coins are useful for public toilets, small tips, vending machines and quick purchases. Use a small coin pouch if you dislike loose change.
Credit cards are excellent for hotels and shopping, especially high-value purchases. For luxury goods and VAT refund shopping, pay with a card that you can track easily. Keep receipts organized by store and date. If your refund will return to a card, make sure the card remains active and accessible after travel. Do not throw away purchase documents just because the boutique handed you a bag.
Tipping in Rome is not like tipping in some countries. Service may be included or a cover charge may appear. You can round up or leave a small amount for good service, but large percentage tips are not always expected. Check the bill before adding anything.
Protect your wallet in crowds. Pickpocketing can happen around metro stations, buses, crowded piazzas and major attractions. Use a zipped bag, keep cards separated and avoid flashing large amounts of cash after shopping.
Money management in Rome is mostly about friction. Have enough cash for small moments, use cards for trackable purchases, understand conversion choices and keep VAT refund paperwork safe. A simple system prevents avoidable stress.
